Location

Xristos is located on the Greek island of Lesbos, the home of Sappho, Arion, Terpander, Alcaeus, Theophrast, Menander, and in our time Theophilos and Elytis. Lesbos is the island of beauty, poetry and philosophy - the first home of the later Aristotelian peripatetics.

Lesbos is located close to modern Turkey in the north-east of the Aegean sea. It is the largest and the most sunny of them all. From a scientific point of view it has wonderful opportunities for ornitologists, archeologists, students of fine arts, historians, geologists, ecologists, fine arts, paleography, Byzantine theology, and so forth. For recreation it offers everything from diving into Aristotle's sunken city of Pyrra to mountain climbing on Olympus mountain 1000 meter high.

Xristos Research Centre is a part of the large Leimonos Monastery built in 1526, with its seven daughter monasteries . If you want to know more about the Leimonos Monastery, please go to the Leimonos Monastery section.

One of the daughter monasteries is Metochi, located on the large plain on sea level a ride from the Kalloni Bay - the word kalloni meaning "belle". Metochi is now a study/conference centre of the University of Agder. Xristos Research Centre itself is located half a kilometer from Metochi, and was originally a resort for the monks responsible for the agricultural duties of the monastery, as well as for contemplation and talks for the monks who more than four hundred years ago who gathered around the old well nearby the Church.

The two towns nearby, Kalloni and Skala Kallonis, offer everything you may need from shopping, health care, restaurants, old fashioned bakeries, vehicles, travel agents - and of course a sandy shore some kilometers long. The third town in the area is the dormant Daphia, once the home town of the most beautiful women in antiquity according to Homer's Illiad.

It takes years to investigate all the mysteries of the many towns at Lesbos, excavations, churches, monastaries and other sites on the island. And the mysteries have just begun to be uncovered.
